The mushrooming use of handhelds & mobile devices
in the corporation brings up the challenge of making room for them
not only in the corporate network but in IT policies & procedures
as well. Supporting, managing & controlling a multitude of technologies
& compatible applications on the mobile devices require meticulous
planning.
- LAN based desktop tools which were designed for use over constant,
reliable, unmetered, high-speed connections have to be replaced/modified
for mobile users
- Network tools should be optimized for fast data transfer, checkpoints
to resume downloads & transmit only the pertinent parts of
altered files or applications in a group collaboration
- Solutions that make best use of the existing communications
infrastructure as the transport mechanism are good for speedy
rollouts, fast adoption by users and low impact on the technology
budget.
- Integration & management of handheld devices is possible
with softwares like Aether's Software (ScoutWare Suite) &
Tivoli Systems Inc. (Tivoli Device Manager). Features include
single-action application deployment and removal, real-time software
and hardware inventory, event correlation and a centralized view
of mobile devices.
- Develop a well-integrated mobile PC & handheld management
plan for routine maintenance tasks
Data security:
- Handheld devices may get lost or stolen (along with corporate
data), opening doors to corporate intranets/portals.
- Moving information back and forth between device and server
can make data vulnerable to interception or corruption, especially
in wireless communication.
- Security solutions are mostly desktop based & do not penetrate
the corporate firewall. They are mostly limited to the Secure
Socket Layer (SSL) standard.
- XcelleNet Inc.'s Afaria protects data with an electronic security
system that authenticates users, encrypts data transmissions and
prevents lost devices from accessing corporate systems.
- Symantec Corp. & McAfee.com provide anti virus software
for handhelds.
Synchronisation:
- Synchronisation of data should not be limited through physical
docking to a desktop, notebook or through a modem connection.
- Synchronization should be possible via a LAN and a variety of
wireless connections.
- Synchronisation applications should ensure integrity of data
transferred
- They should be able to support a large number of products from
different vendors
- The applications should provide security features for sensitive
data, while they are transferred over public or third party networks.
- Products that meet most of these requirements are Synchrologic's
iMobile Suite, Pumatech Inc.'s Intellisync & Extended Systems'
XTNDConnect Server
- Web-based data synchronization is where users tap into a centralized
data resource for information.
- Web based synchronisation applications should be able to transfer
selected segments of Web-based data to a handheld PC using filtering
technologies that strip off irrelevant graphics and other visual
data and reformat the information for easy viewing on a small
display screen.
- agentGO.com's agentALERT, BSQUARE Corp.'s BSQUARE Messenger
1.1 & NetMorf Corp.'s SiteMorfer 2.0, in between them can
connect mobile users to web apps. or interconnect them irrespective
of the device used.
Upgradation should be possible for mobile devices to facilitate easy
manipulation of the data in future as against viewing filtered data
or copying it into compatible applications (for editing) today. SAP
AG has developed Pocket PC ERP, an ERP application for the pocket
PC. Microsoft plans to port SQL Server to the Pocket PC OS, which
would allow mobile applications to access server databases in the
future.
